The Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system passed the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone in terms of US market share during the first quarter, according to the NPD Group. The Android OS ended the period with a domestic market share of 28%, up from about 20% in the December quarter, and is due mostly to strong sales of handsets including the Droid and Droid Eris at Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), according to the study. The iPhone saw its US market share remain relatively flat at 21% and Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) remains the US leader, with the family of BlackBerry’s market share at around 36%.
